Ph.D. Candidate, Anthropology, UCSD
Aaron Gidding’s love for archaeology began at age twelve when he was a docent at the Field Museum in Chicago. He studied at George Washington University and the University College London before coming to UC San Diego to pursue his Ph.D. with Professor Tom Levy. Currently Gidding is working to create a system for rapid analysis inventory and display of materials as they are collected on excavation sites- a database that allows the archaeologist to integrate what’s going on in the field with the projects here at UC San Diego, and a method of disseminating archaeological data over the internet. Currently his focus has turned more towards traditional “dirt archaeology” where he is focusing on studying pottery of the Early Bronze Age in Southern Jordan to understand political and social
differentiation and the development of utilitarian commodities, especially copper.
