Michelle Chen

Ph.D. student/Trainee

Michelle Chen received her B.S. in Structural Engineering from UC San Diego and her M.S. in Civil Engineering with a focus in Structural Engineering from UC Berkeley. She is currently a Ph.D. student at UC San Diego. She recently was part of a large multi-million dollar research project conducted at the NEES@UCSD shake table where a full-scale five story building fully outfitted with nonstructural components and systems was subjected to a series of earthquake motions while in a base isolated and fixed base configuration. Her continued research involves an in depth investigation of the behavior of the base isolation system used in the previous project when subjected to severe loading conditions. This research will include applying this protective system to culturally significant buildings as well buildings that house historical artifacts such as museums.
